Introduction

Substitute teaching can be a wonderful professional experience. It provides you with flexibility that few other jobs can offer. Take your pick of grade levels while reserving the right to “pass” when you need a day off. Teaching in an elementary school has rewards in every moment. Try the middle (or intermediate) school. Students at that level combine energy with a higher ability to retain, create, and implement knowledge. At the high school level, you can teach a range of subjects from fine arts to math, English and science. At any grade level, there will be rewards and challenges. In a large school corporation, select 2-3 schools and concentrate your efforts on getting to know their faculty and students.

Before you start substitute teaching, ask yourself:

What age level (Elementary, Middle school, or High school) do I prefer?

Are there subjects that I feel particularly well qualified to teach?

Are there subjects that I do not want to teach?

Once you have those answers, you will be able to help the corporation place you where you would be the most useful. You will be, as an adult professional, in the position to be an influence on children’s lives. When assuming the position of substitute teacher, you need to acknowledge that it is your responsibility to have the best influence on students possible.
